Web Sheriff est une compagnie londonienne qui se vend aux artistes les plus offrant souhaitant faire retirer des contenus leur appartenant alors qu’ils sont partagés illégalement. UltimZone, un forum de partage Warez français vient d’en faire les frais avec son compte Twitter.
Web Sheriff, composé de 20 juristes du copyright et experts de l’Internet, propose toute une série de services de lutte contre le piratage en ligne, pour des clients friqués… Le coût mensuel s’élève pour les artistes à 1 000 $, et peut grimper jusqu’à 25 000 $ selon la nature des services.
Certains pensent que la société va trop loin dans ses actions. Elle a déjà fait fermer plusieurs sites, y compris pour une simple publication d’une photo d’un artiste. Les ayant-droits savent que les fans ne contesteront pas leurs requêtes, ça leur coûterait trop cher de lutter… Ben voyons ! La plupart des artistes font appel à Web Sheriff pour des services moins sujets à controverse. Lors de la fuite du dernier album d’Animal Collective en décembre dernier, Web Sheriff a nettoyé le Net de plus de 10 000 liens permettant de télécharger l’album. “Il est impossible de colmater totalement une fuite sur le Net” d’après le fondateur de Web Sheriff, John Giacobbi. “Mais nous arrivons à mettre 90% des liens hors d’état de nuire.” Pour cela, Web Sheriff a développé une technologie à même de débusquer les liens illégaux partout sur le Net, et ce, quelque soit la technologie : BitTorrent & P2P, Warez & DDL, YouTube, serveurs Web d’hébergement, etc.
Les plaintes DMCA peuvent alors pleuvoir. Ceux qui reçoivent des mails d’avertissement coopèrent dans la grande majorité des cas. John Giacobbi précise même que “certains sites Torrent nous permettent de faire le ménage nous-mêmes, mais je ne suis bien sûr pas en mesure de vous dévoiler lesquels”.
Hier, le compte Twitter de la board française Ultim-Zone en a fait les frais, en se voyant bloqué sans préavis suite à une plainte DMCA émanant de Web Sheriff. Un mail envoyé par le support du réseau social pour seul information, demandant expressément de supprimer les liens signalés du fil d’actualité.

Au lieu de prendre le taureau par les cornes comme on dit, et d’avoir le courage de remonter sur les principaux intermédiaires comme google, quelques chose me dit que comme d’habitude on vas simplement ce contentait de laisser cette situation stagner, a la fin il n’y aura que les artistes les plus riches qui se permetrons de faire cela, ce qui laissera la place aux artistes moins connue cela leurs fera de la pub tant mieux. Et en ce qui concerne le copyrighting, je crois que c’est de pire e pire en ce qui concerne la mentalité des journalistes, j’ai noter certains éléments ces derniers temps a ce sujet, melheureusement je ne peux pas faire de résumer, mais tout ce que je peux dire c’est que la spéculation vas bon train.
